About OPTO2024

OPTO2024 was a student-led international conference on optics, photonics, and related research fields, hosted in Prague. Organizing the conference was a rewarding experience and an opportunity to create a space where early-career researchers could present their work, exchange ideas, and build professional connections. The program combined scientific talks and poster sessions with broader discussions on academic and professional development. In addition to research-focused content, the conference addressed topics such as science communication, impostor syndrome, and career paths beyond academia with several CEOs from startaps from across Europe, making the program highly relevant for students at different stages of their studies. A key highlight was a half-day visit to the ELI Beamlines facility, offering participants a rare insight into large-scale research infrastructure and cutting-edge laser technology. Industry involvement and a dedicated panel on the transition from PhD research to entrepreneurship further connected academic research with real-world applications. Of course, this being a students-for-students event, heavy emphasis was placed on networking. With around 100 participats from across Europe, OPTO2024 fostered an open and collaborative atmosphere and demonstrated the impact of well-organized, student-driven scientific events. OPTO2024 was one of the reasons our chapter was recognized as a runner-up in the SPIE Presidential award 2025.

Outcome

Successfully delivered a complete conference experience - Strengthened cross-group connections within the optics community - Established a reusable template for future student-led events.

Lessons learned

Organizing even a small conference is a systems problem: clear ownership, lightweight documentation, and flexibility mattered the most.
